The UNCONVINCING Religion..!

Take-1: On my birthday, I was on a family outing and as it always happens when I travel with my family, a temple visit is outright mandatory. I was along with my father, mother and my grandma. My father entered the main gabhara nonchalantly and we were about to follow when my mother stopped in her stride and exclaimed, “Bhairavnathachya mandiraat bai-manus jaat nahi!” (It’s not allowed for women to enter the Bhairavnath temple). I reacted, “What? Who the hell made this rule?” Mom, well aware of the fact that I will keep pressing my point, firmly replied, “No, means no.” But I was reluctant to listen to them and almost pushed them inside saying, “Let’s see what happens when a woman enters. Will this temple crash or will God punish us for not obeying the rules made by some idiot who obviously had a thing against women or some incident had happened in his life which prompted him to make such a hopeless rule?” My grandma almost threw herself out begging God to forgive her but I held my mom’s hands tight and asked her to pray without thinking of anything else. She did pray after I calmed her with my father staring angrily at me and her. I tried to explain but as always, ‘how much one tries to explain people with “prejudices”, one seldom succeeds.’

Take-2: Yesterday, a message on my mobile read: Please do not react to provocative SMS targeted to create a rift in the name of 24th September verdict. Regards, Commissioner of Police, Pune.

Take-3: While having a chat with a ‘doctor’ friend this morning, he happily said how he was excited about coming Friday and how he and his friends were planning to celebrate after the 24th September verdict. He seemed so overwhelmed from his voice as if the verdict was already declared in the so-called Hindu group’s favour. They planned to burn crackers to let the world know about their happiness. I, being always opposed to such tactics, tried to explain how their step may fuel something as bad as riots. But then he gave me that old cliché “I know how me and my family have suffered from these riots. U don’t know a thing!” Obviously I kept mum given the gravity of the situation.

Now, what is with this religion and God concept that people get so emotionally flared up? If they are emotional about it, why can’t they be ‘peacefully’ emotional about it? Why there is so much vengeance in their minds when they talk about religion? Or should I say religious disputes? Why are there disputes in the first place when religion is all about peace-of-mind i.e. spirituality?

The answers are not so simple. The issue related to the 24th September verdict is not of the present. It dates back to almost 1889. I am not going to discuss the issue here coz according to me it doesn’t even merit a discussion. What I am going to discuss is what is at the root of this issue. At the root lies our so-called great Indian culture and tradition which teaches that there exist a ‘x’ number of religions co-existing peacefully in India and every religion has its explanation for the existence of God while also stating that people are still divided on the basis of the faith they follow and people should be careful while commenting on religion in public. It’s almost forced upon us to be ‘proud’ of our culture.

Now tell me, how and why should I be proud of a culture which has for ages prevented women from entering a particular temple? And now being in the 21st century, we are still not in a position to change that mindset? Why should I be proud of a culture which till today hasn’t been able to resolve a conflict over a mere piece of land? Whether this land belongs to Hindus or Muslims? (Oh, come on! Can’t a common temple-mosque stand over there just as a show of UNITY to the world?) Are our hearts converted into stones when precious human lives are lost in the name of God and religion? When just for a simple reason that the other person belongs to a different faith, people pick up swords and mercilessly kill each other, does their pride go for a ride? I really don’t find any pride when the second thing asked after my name in any job-application or even a school admission is religion & caste.

According to DR.SARVEPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN,”Nothing is so hostile to religion as other religions. The world would be a much more religious place if all religions were removed from it.” I couldn’t agree more. Taking into account both the functional and dysfunctional aspects of religion, I have found the dysfunctional aspects more convincing than the functional ones. As in the ‘Take-1’ above, rather than giving importance to praying whole-heartedly, the restrictions imposed were thought about more and not to break them was taken care of. There’s no need of “mores” to be followed when what we have to do is as simple a thing as pray. And by the way, who decided these customs and usages? It must be a person or a group of people brandishing themselves as ‘protectors of the tradition’ or ‘servants of God’; but just coz they are being followed since ages, it doesn’t make them RIGHT!

As far as I can remember all the greatest of disputes right from time immemorial have had their seeds in religion or caste. Actually, religion is a byproduct of CASTE. People compared and divided first on the basis of professions then on the basis of their faiths which is unfortunately going on till today. People haven’t been able to break free from the prejudices what their forefathers had, when there’s enough proof to suggest otherwise. This is where I feel is the bane in this problem- it’s easy to teach a 3-year old kid to read and write but it gets impossible to flush out the preconceived notions from a grown-up or even a well-educated adult.

This brings me to the point where the great KARL MARX went to the extent of saying that ‘religion is opium to the people’. When people aren’t able to find solution to their own problems, they search for answers through God who is nothing but a sort of intoxication, maybe at a peaceful level. At first it seemed blasphemous to me but then I came upon another great French philosopher VOLTAIRE’s lines which plainly said, “If God did not exist it would be necessary to invent him.” For once, it seemed so true to me. And why not? It is some person who is responsible to create this image of God. All these religious scriptures and holy books did not fall from the sky. They were hand-written on this very earth. There is lack of REASON. On the other hand, “Science does provide satisfactory and rational explanation to the evolution of human life which any religion has not been able to till date.”

When the same religion which promised to be peaceful turns life-threatening for my countrymen or my near and dear ones as in the case of 24th September verdict, it’s better to look at that religion ambiguously. Still, I would not describe myself as an atheist. An AGNOSTIC would be better. I know there is very little to separate the two concepts but, who knows, maybe that little itself may become path-breaking in times to come. After all, as the finest English romantic poet PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY said, “The more we study, the more we discover our ignorance!” Maybe there’s a lot of ignorance (even in my own self) around which is needed to be discovered. Maybe or may not be! The whole concept stands on the edge of “MAYBE” which makes it so intriguing and fascinating to study!

  1. At first i never like to comment on religious matters coz i know what i beleive and there's no point arguing over this. First of all man cannot find his existence how will he find the existence of GOD. U can't change someone's else view. Human is the most difficult thing GOD created and he himself might be repenting for that. He created humans but his one mistake was that he gave them brains. And of course it now depend on us how to use it whether for useless thought or useful. Ur way of thinking is very right but u cant change other's way of thinkin because each human is a fingerprint and for that u will have to first study the fingerprint and then change it. So how many are u goin to study individually?

  2. That's the problem what i m talking about! U just can't change the "Prejudices" all have in their minds! The world would have been a far safer and peaceful place if that was possible. EVEN TODAY, what happens is every person looks at the other person through THE PRISM OF OTHER'S CASTE OR RELIGION. There's large amount of doubt involved, for eg, when a Hindu interacts with a Muslim, or Christian with a Muslim, or even in intra-faiths, there have been wars fought and thousands killed like in the case of Shia-Sunnis, Brahmins-Dalits, Marathas-Brahmins, Catholics-Protestants, etc. It may not be visible explicitly, but the doubts exist in today's new generation's minds.. I have closely seen people getting immensely aggressive to prove their points in religious matters. Even on the world level, the most significant thread dividing people is the Western Christian world against the Middle-east Muslim world. If any next major war happens, this religious division is gonna be the centre of the crisis.

And NO, i m no mood to change what others' think sbout God and religion. Otherwise, what would be the difference between those rioting people and me? I just want people to get out of the RIGID mindset and conduct religious affairs peacefully rather than fighting over it. I just want them to break that PRISM thru which they see other's faith. (Again for eg, when i asked the name of ur friend yesterday, u added a rider- She's a BRAHMIN. Now i didn't ask that. U must have also said it like that only with no negative or positive intentions. It must have come out of ur mind impulsively. But this is the impulse of almost 99% of the people which, unlike u, is for WRONG reasons most of the time. Why to know somebody thru his/her faith? Man searches for the faith of other person thru other's name! This is the ultimate tragedy!)

The last 2 paragraghs were entirely my PERSONAL view. Any true follower of God would never get carried away by those 2 paras. I don't fear God coz u know, if u fear God, it means u r doing something wrong and if u have done something wrong, anyways u don't fear him! It's that simple. But yes, there's one thing i fear and that is 'I fear being called an Hypocrite which i m not'. So i went straight to the root matter where i say i m better off known as an Agnostic than being involved in any RELIGIOUS discussion which has it's roots in DIVIDING people with the same red blood running in everybody's veins.. I just wish rather than a religious IDENTITY separating people, there was only one major identity i.e. the NATIONAL IDENTITY..!

  4. Rohan, your blog is riveting. I completely agree with your views. Very good try, but at the end of the day, Whatever you try to explain such "Narrow-minded" people of restricted mentality who live in their own shell, they r not going to listen like the comment i read above. I feel nothing but "Pity" on such people. At the end of the day, all are human-beings and religion thing is just bull-shit.

  5. Firstly Dr.Tushar I Dont kno to whom u are Pointing Narrow minded.. If you are pointing on me then let me tell u that m not Criticising Him Sarcastically.. I am Fulll on Praising him for the Blog which is riveting every Reader.. These Topics have become a part and parcel of life in such a way that people always neglect or keep a foot away from it.. If his Blog is appealing the readers then its so good.. Its high time People need to give a Good thought to this Topic and Sort it out before it will cause sufferings and unwanted situations..
Moving Forward from this Here i would like to mention that when the Question arises that how can we Change the thoughts of each and every Indiviual I feel it can be Done!! I dont mean that we go hard core Grilling into the minds of the people but by setting an example ourselves.. We Dont Order ; We Show!! We just Cant Pull Back just by Saying that each indiviual is a different fingerprint.. Let me explain scientifically.. All of us at the basic level are made up of cells; Going still Further made up of Protons, neutrons and Electrons.. So Basically We all are one form of energy(No Difference only).A Change can be brought about in Every Indiviual Through the Power of Love and faith and discipline.. The more we emit Positive Frquencies more will be the effect.. The process has already begun By some Social Organisations in India Like Happy Thoughts, Art of Living etc..Which are Training and Showing People the way regardless of any Religion or caste and also not themselves Portraying as a New religion .Just showing the Way..They are reuniting people.. At this Juncture we just cant sit and watch but we can be true to ourselves and do our best in whatever we do and thus Contribute our bit for the big Cause..
The Present situation has to be Accepted.. Everything Changes and the Current Situation will also Change.
Finally i would conclude lets Stop worrying Focusing and Pitying on Narrow mindness of the people like our third Commentator and start focusing on a bigger and better Picture of our Countrymen Living in Harmony Despite the Present scenario.. Doubt the Shortcomings and Have faith in the Prosperity!!!

  6. Guys, let me first clear the misunderstanding here!

@ANI, the doctor didn't point u for sure. He was talking in general of the people he has come across personally and MAYBE our first commenter. And u made very telling points. It's about prospering and not getting entangled in the old traditions for nothing. We can make that CHANGE happen as young generation and hope that young generation themselves don't create divisiveness.

@DOCTOR, i m first of all glad u liked my post. And doc, i was gonna title this article as "THE RELIGIOUS BULLSHIT" as u have mentioned but that wud be disrespecting, so i didn't. I understand the ANGER u have inside u for prejudiced people, but u can't take a stick and change them all.
And as we have talked about it a lot of times, this Religion-God thing is like the diseases u cure. More than the virus or bacteria inside d body, the DISEASE is in people's bloody minds. Till the time, a person individually himself throws it of his mind that he is unwell, he cant be cured. But still u do ur job. Isn't it? U cure the body, not the mind without feeling "PITY" on them.
In the same way, these people r our very own. We'll have to keep doing our jobs trying to explain them without expecting a great deal. After all, if the narrow-minded or prejudiced person doesn't understand, it's HIS/HER LOSS. After a while, we cant help it..!

  7. Guys if you agree with DR.SARVEPALLI RADHAKRISHNAN thoughts, then always remember that Change your mind first then change the world. Start the changes in our life first then automatically, you feel world which are surrounded by you, your relatives, your friends, your collogues, your parents, your children are start accepting your thoughts happily.
If you thought this is not correct thing which is happened around you then you should changed first.
Dreamer optimist this for you.... If you feel you is right then do that only which you feel right.
Always remember first change yourself then automatically world will start accepting change.
Tell me when your & my parents are kids; they have the free environment to talk, to debate with your grandparents?
In my case, No they didn't have free environment as we have.
At that time, they thought this environment is not a good for our future hence, they give the freedom to you, me. In this way only, the changes will happen.
Same as religion also, after some time it will be totally disappear from the world as per Dr. Radhakrishnan's thoughts. It will take time, but it will happen. And if you want to happen like this then everyone should be contributed little; to change the thoughts.
You know there is marathi sentence" Lankela phochnyasathi bandhlelya pulat Kharicha vata mota hota." Only small squirrel can help to make the bridge then why you & me?
